The graphical boost and improved load times and draw distance will not impress you. Special Edition doesn’t offer anything in the way of ‘new stuff’, unless you missed out on all the DLC first time round. Chances are you’ve played it more recently, and you’ve already modded the hell out of it. In fact, if you’re a PC player unrestricted by the console cycle, then this game most definitely isn’t for you. Does it look better than the PC version with any of the high-end visual mods in play? No. The visual overhaul for this Special Edition is good enough to let the game pass in 2016, and it probably makes the experience appear ‘as good as you remember it being in 2011’, even with the rosiest-tinted of spectacles on your nose. Even The Witcher 3’s magnificent landscape - which is certainly better looking - can’t match that sense of magic you get from Skyrim. That inviting otherworldliness, which is at once fantastical and familiar, has been often imitated yet never bettered.

Just be prepared to take some time off work to play – you’re going to need it.Is this game worth buying if you played the game for 200 hours back in 2011? Yes, it really is, because the sheer joy of existing within Skyrim’s world remains unsurpassed. It’s not the most overwhelming remaster, but then Skyrim has always been a special game it’s remarkable that it remains interesting, compelling and fabulously addictive five years after its release. Dragonborn sends you to an entirely new part of the world, fresh with new places to explore and quests to complete, with an entirely different landscape.Īll of this adds up to an experience that remains fantastic despite any technical shortcomings. It’s a great addition, but it’s the second chunk of content that’s more worth your time. The first, Dawnguard, explores the vampires that infect the underbelly of Skyrim’s occult and have you joining forces with a band of vampire hunters. It also includes both of the game’s sizeable expansions. Previously restricted to PC only, these player created downloads let you change the look of the game, the way it functions and add entirely new quests.

As well as the enormous base game, the special edition includes mod support for consoles.
